The Latin and Irish Lives of Ciaran
About this book
The Latin and Irish lives of CiarĂĄn of Clonmacnoise, founder of the great monastery on the Shannon, translated and set beside a harmony of the four versions: the wizard's prophecies at his birth, the dun cow he took to school at Clonard, the calf restored from the wolf, the gifts of cattle and of a plough-coulter. Macalister, an archaeologist who had excavated in Palestine and held the chair of Celtic archaeology in Dublin, published the translations in 1921. The value is in the comparison: the same saint, told in two languages for different audiences. Sixty plates of Irish landscape and life by painters such as Augustus Nicholas Burke and James Humbert Craig, from the Liffey to Connemara, give the saint's country a face.
