A foundling pulled out of the Irwell in flood grows up through the Peterloo massacre and the building of the railways to become a Manchester merchant. Mrs Banks lived through the period and the novel is the classic account of that city's making. This edition binds 56 plates after Luke Fildes, Frederic Leighton and George Richmond, with three appendices.
