The United States from the discoveries to the end of the nineteenth century, written by the historian who first insisted that the daily life of ordinary Americans belonged in the record beside the presidents. McMaster's school history was used for forty years and made the frontier, the roads and the price of flour part of the story. His judgements on slavery and on the Mexican war were franker than most textbooks of his day. Fifty-nine plates, among them Yosemite Falls and Sierra Nevada by Albert Bierstadt and a Remington scene of the frontier, carry the American landscape and its people alongside the text.
