About this book
A young officer curses his country at a court martial and is sentenced never to hear its name again, spending fifty years at sea under orders that no one mention America to him. Hale wrote it in 1863 as war propaganda and it became one of the most reprinted American stories ever written. This edition adds fifty-eight plates of paintings by Edvard Munch, Charles Fraser, Winthrop Chandler and others, dating from 1776 to 1918.
