Weigall wrote in 1911 for readers who thought archaeology was treasure-hunting, and argued that it is mostly bookkeeping and heat. He is funny about his colleagues and serious about the looting. Sixty plates from 1640 to 1911, among them Turner and John Martin, carry the same ruined-monument light the chapters describe.
