A boy is cheated of his inheritance by an uncle, sold to a ship, and wrecked on the Hebridean coast, where he falls in with a Jacobite fugitive with a price on his head. Stevenson built it on the real Appin murder of 1752, for which a man almost certainly innocent was hanged; the flight through the heather is the best chase he ever wrote. Its 60 original illustrations have been carefully restored and coloured for this edition.
