This book has been skillfully crafted. Linda Isiorho interviewed a number of women, many of whom were either part-time, supporting their full-time stipendiary vicar husbands, or, as they were known, non-stipendiary ministers. In the foreword, Isiorho’s husband, David Isiorho, has set out the context for Flexible Working which was this in-depth research into the deployment of female priests in the Church of England after twenty years of their presbyteral status. People like Rosy, whose story is told in this novel, refused to have a negative in their title and called themselves self-supporting ministers, following the example of St. Paul himself who made tents for a living if he needed money. David Isiorho notes that none of the women Linda interviewed have had an easy journey, although for some with the right connections, life had become smoother over the years. These women ranged from those who were passionate and articulate about their vocation, reinventing themselves to fulfill their calling, and giving up a great deal in the process, to those who fitted into the privileged classes with all the attendant benefits. However, Rosy, the hero of this story, was to forge her way through the male mechanisms of a male church.
