Haiti won its freedom. France sent the ransom note.
In 1825, French warships anchored off Port-au-Prince with an ordinance from the king: pay 150 million francs to former colonists, and France would finally recognize the independence Haiti had already won in battle. Haiti accepted, borrowed to make the first payment, and carried the financial consequences for generations.
The Ransom of Freedom follows the money and the people who bore its weight, from the first loan to its long afterlife.
