History of the United States of America, Volume 4

Henry Adams

"History of the United States of America, Volume 4" continues his detailed chronicle of the nation's development, focusing on the period from 1817 to 1825, during James Monroe's presidency. This volume covers the "Era of Good Feelings," a time marked by a sense of national unity and political harmony following the War of 1812. Adams explores Monroe's efforts to strengthen national infrastructure, including the establishment of roads and canals, and his foreign policy achievements, such as the Monroe Doctrine, which asserted American influence in the Western Hemisphere and warned European powers against further colonization. Adams also delves into the significant domestic issues of the era, including the Missouri Compromise of 1820, which addressed the contentious issue of slavery's expansion into new territories. He examines the rise of sectionalism and the beginnings of political realignment that would later culminate in the formation of new political parties. Through meticulous research and engaging narrative, Adams paints a comprehensive picture of Monroe's administration, highlighting its successes and challenges. This volume is essential for understanding the complexities of post-war America, the roots of future conflicts, and the evolution of American political and social landscapes during Monroe's presidency.
