The African Missionary: The Life of Harry Kambwiri Matecheta

About this book

This small book is a companion to Harry Kambwiri Matecheta's Blantyre Mission: Stories of its Beginning, which was published in a critical edition by Luviri Press in 2020. Its original publication in 1951 as Blantyre Mission: Nkhani za Ciyambi Cace stands out as the first attempt by a Malawian to write church history and one that challenged the Eurocentric bias of earlier accounts. Now Matecheta's pioneering work is complemented by this biography, authored by his son Clement Harry Matecheta. It appears that Clement completed the manuscript in the late 1960s and it got as far as galley proofs without ever being published. Instead, soon after Clement's death in 1969, the galley proofs were deposited in the Malawi National Archives, along with a Foreword by Professor George Shepperson of Edinburgh University. With the kind permission of the National Archives, this long delayed work finally achieves publication. Through the lens of Matecheta's life, it offers a unique perspective on ways in which African communities navigated religious, cultural and political change during the colonial period in Malawi.l
