About this book
Performance arises from loneliness and creates more loneliness. While solitude begins as being "chosen," over time it becomes "suffered": it becomes a dependence that the performance-oriented person wants to pass off as a virtue, but which constitutes the profound sign of loss, the loss of relationships. Obsessed with resources, not only material but also immaterial--values, ideas, doctrines, models, programs, strategies--the performance-oriented person naively and recklessly distances himself from the only source that can enhance him and guarantee his flourishing. The performance-oriented person does not know that the objectification of the world ends up objectifying him in turn. It is the other who introduces opacity, resistance, an obstacle to planning and any kind of efficiency. Only discernment and foresight can allow people to see this as the only guarantee of joy.
