Understanding the Language
General
Of the many versions of Spanish in South America, the Argentine version is among the most difficult to understand. However, it is much better to know a little Spanish when you arrive. English might be spoken at major hotels and by quite a few Argentines in Buenos Aires, but don’t count on it outside the capital.
Pronunciation and
Grammar Tips
Argentines tend to use a local vocabulary with little resemblance to classical Spanish, while the local accent imposes a soft “j” sound on the “ll” and “y” and most people speak very rapidly without enunciating clearly. At the same time, when using the second person familiar, Argentines use the form “vos” instead of the more common “tĂș”. (Note also that in Latin American Spanish the plural form of you is “ustedes” rather than “vosotros,” as used in Spain.) The verb form used with “vos” places the accent on the last, rather than the penultimate syllable (for example, “¿que hacÉs?” instead of “¿quÉ hAces?” – what are you doing?).
