Understanding the Language

Basic Rules

Here are a few basic rules of grammar and pronunciation: c before e or i is pronounced “ch” as in ciao. Ch before i or e is pronounced as “k”, eg la chiesa. Likewise, sci or sce are pronounced as in “sheep” or “shed” respectively. Gn in Italian is rather like the sound in “onion”, while gl is softened to resemble the sound in “bullion”.

Nouns are either masculine (il, plural i) or feminine (la, plural le). Plurals of nouns are most often formed by changing an o to an i and an a to an e, e.g. il panino, i panini; la chiesa, le chiese.

Words are stressed on the penultimate syllable unless an accent indicates otherwise.

Italian has formal and informal words for “You”. In the singular, Tu is informal while Lei is more polite. It is best to use the formal form unless invited to do otherwise.
