Understanding the Language
It is worth trying to master a few simple phrases in French before holidaying in Réunion. The fact that you have made an effort is likely to get you a better response. Pronunciation is the key; they really will not understand if you get it very wrong. Remember to emphasise each syllable, but not to pronounce the last consonant of a word as a rule (this includes the plural ‘s’) and always to drop your ‘h’s. Whether to use ‘vous’ or ‘tu’ is a vexed question; increasingly the familiar form of ‘tu’ is used by many people. However, it is better to be too formal, and use ‘vous’ if in doubt. It is very important to be polite; always address people as Madame or Monsieur, and address them by their surnames until you are confident first names are acceptable. When entering a shop always say, ‘Bonjour Monsieur/Madame,’ and ‘Merci, au revoir,’ when leaving.
The alphabet
Learning the pronunciation of the French alphabet is a good idea. In particular, learn how to spell out your name.
