Language

German is the native language of about 100 million people, but not all of them live in continental Europe. As well as Germany, Austria, parts of Switzerland, Belgium and some small German enclaves in eastern Europe, there are also German-speaking communities in North America, South America and South Africa.

In terms of language groups, German and English are both part of the West Germanic languages, together with Dutch, Frisian, Flemish and Afrikaans, but while a Dutch person and a German may be able to communicate quite effectively, an English peron and a German are unlikely to make much progress, despite the many similarities between the two languages. A quick glance at the numbers from one to ten will prove that point immediately.

Anyone who learnt Latin at school will be familiar with some of the difficulties that the German language presents to foreigners: nouns have three genders and four cases, verbs are conjugated, pronouns are followed by one of three cases, the word order in sentences is governed by some complicated rules and there are five different ways that you can say ‘the’. The only compensation is that pronunciation is always perfectly consistent with the spelling.
