Making Contact
Whether you need to know what time the next bus leaves or how to book a hotel room, making yourself understood in the local language will really help you get the most out of your stay in South America. The good news is that you can get by in the whole continent with just two languages: Spanish and Portuguese (with the obvious exceptions of the Guyanas).
While people in many tourist establishments will speak English, once you are off the beaten track, hardly anyone will, and just making the effort to speak a few words will be appreciated, as well as making life easier. There are idiomatic differences from one country to the next, but you will soon pick these up as you go.
It would be impossible for us to give a complete language guide here, but the following are some useful words, phrases, and tips that will hopefully ease understanding.
Spanish
There is a colorful variety of local idioms throughout Spanish South America. In Argentina and Uruguay, the Spanish “ll,” as in “llanos,” comes out like something between a j and zh, whereas elsewhere it is more like “y,” as in Spain; while the familiar “tu” is replaced by the archaic sounding “vos.” In Chile, they are notorious for dropping the ends off their words, particularly those...
