Basic rules
Spanish is the language of Cuba. It is a phonetic language: words are pronounced exactly as they are spelled. Spanish distinguishes between the two genders, masculine and feminine, and the subjunctive verb form is an endless source of headaches for students. As a general rule, the accent falls on the second-to-last syllable, unless it is otherwise marked with an accent (´) or the word ends in D, L, R, or Z.
Vowels in Spanish are always pronounced the same way. The double L (LL) is pronounced like the y in ‘yes,’ the double R is rolled. The H is silent in Spanish, whereas J (and G when it precedes an E or I) is pronounced like a guttural H (similar to the end sound of Scottish loch).
When addressing someone you are not familiar with, use the formal ‘usted.’ The informal ‘tú’ is reserved for relatives and friends. It is worth trying to master a few words and phrases.
