Der vorliegende Band weist auf die Existenz intensiver eurasischer Wirkungszusammenhänge bereits in der Zeit vor der europäischen Expansion hin. Er geht auf den Jahresvortrag 2015 Gibt es ein eurasisches Mittelalter? des Mittelalterzentrums der Berlin-Brandenburgischen Akademie der Wissenschaften zurück. Ziel der vorliegenden, erweiterten Abhandlung ist es nicht, ein umfassendes eurasisches Mittelalter zu 'konstruieren', sondern aufzuzeigen, dass das europäische Mittelalter nicht nur ein europäisches Phänomen sui generis, sondern auch ein eurasisches Phänomen war. Die Existenz eurasischer Wirkungszusammenhänge von der frühen Geschichte bis in die Zeit des europäischen Mittelalters wird insbesondere am Beispiel transkontinentaler Migrationen und transkultureller Verflechtungen aufgezeigt. Die Studie verdeutlicht, dass die Zeit des Mittelalters einen Höhepunkt intensiver, Jahrtausende alter vormoderner eurasischer transkultureller und wirtschaftlicher Begegnungen darstellt, die im 13. und 14. Jahrhundert bereits deutliche Anzeichen einer frühmodernen Globalisierung aufweisen.
