WELCOMING SHABBAT
CANDLE LIGHTING
It is a tradition to give money to charity before kindling the Shabbat lights. Meditation before lighting the Shabbat candles. Add the words in brackets if you have children.

Cover the eyes with the hands after lighting the candles, and say:

Many congregations sing the following before the Welcoming Shabbat Service:
YEDID NEFESH

draw Your servant close to Your will.
Like a deer will Your servant run
and fall prostrate before Your beauty.
To him Your love is sweeter
than honey from the comb, than any taste.

my soul is sick with love for You.
Please, GOD, heal her now
by showing her Your tender radiance.
Then she will recover her strength and be healed,
and have everlasting joy.

and have pity on Your beloved child.
How long have I yearned
to see the glory of Your strength.
These things my heart passionately desires -
have pity; do not hide Yourself.

the tabernacle of Your peace.
Let the earth shine with Your glory,
let us be overjoyed and rejoice in You.
Hurry, beloved, for the appointed time has come,
and be gracious to us as in the times of old.
On a Festival or its intermediate Shabbat, or on the evening immediately after a Festival, the service begins with Psalm 92 on page 271. On Festivals falling on a weekday, the service begins with “Bless the LORD” on page 275.
Mourners during the week of shivah leave the synagogue at this point, returning after “Come, my beloved” on page 271.
