Die so schwerelos wirkende »Taugenichts«-Novelle hat eine schwierige Entstehungs- und Textgeschichte. Im I. Band sind alle erhaltenen Textstufen und Texte zusammengefaßt und dargeboten: der verschollene und hier erstmals veröffentlichte Entwurf zum zweiten Kapitel; die Handschrift »Der neue Troubadour« als Faksimile sowie als genetischer Text, also mit integralem Apparat, der zusätzlich (und in farbiger Kennzeichnung) die Varianten der Drucke enthält; die Faksimiles des Zeitschriftendruckes von 1823 und der Erstausgabe von 1826, dazu ein ausgedehnter lemmatisierter Apparat, der nicht nur alle Varianten der bisherigen Textgeschichte und die Fehler der Erstausgabe, sondern auch alle (für die Rezeption wichtigen) Fremdvarianten der »Taugenichts«-Texte bis zum Ende der Schutzfrist verzeichnet; schließlich die Faksimiles der Titelblätter und Illustrationen der Einzel- und Gesamtausgaben. Gemäß dieser Dokumentation und mit dem gleichen Aufbau verfolgt der II. Band Schritt für Schritt die Textgeschichte.
