Französische Präpositionen treten als obligatorische Markierungen syntaktischer Funktionen auf (donner qc à qn), versprachlichen semantische Oppositionen (à/avant/après 10 h) und sind schließlich Bestandteil komplexer Wendungen, die im Einzelfall kaum von frei bildbaren Syntagmen zu unterscheiden sind (à la place de, eu égard à ). Eine Abgrenzung gegenüber anderen lexikalischen Kategorien ist damit ebenso problematisch wie eine Subsystematisierung innerhalb der Kategorie P (Präposition) selbst. Während in Grammatiken und traditionellen Arbeiten stets neue Listen von Präpositionen vorgeschlagen wurden, situiert die Grammatikalisierungsforschung die fraglichen Einheiten auf einer Skala zwischen den Polen "Lexikon" und "Grammatik" und propagiert damit einen flexiblen Umgang mit kategorialen Analysegrößen. Allerdings wird hierbei die syntaktisch-konfigurationelle Seite von Kategorienübergängen oft nicht hinreichend modelliert, was insbesondere für Fragen der Wortstellungsvariation und der Reanalyse problematisch ist. In der vorliegenden Arbeit werden deshalb neuere generative Ansätze wie Chomskys Minimalist Program und Kaynes Antisymmetrie-Theorie aufgearbeitet und mit dem Ziel einer adäquaten Beschreibung der präpositionalen Elemente des Französischen in den grammatikalisierungstheoretischen Rahmen integriert. Der Schwerpunkt liegt auf den Übergängen zwischen P und den lexikalischen Nachbarkategorien einerseits sowie von P zur funktionalen Kategorie K (Kasusmarker) andererseits.
