Die "Grammatik der portugiesischen Sprache" geht vom Satz als Ganzem aus und stellt die Beschreibung der Wortarten in einen syntaktischen Zusammenhang. Sie gliedert sich in drei Teile:

Teil 1 beschreibt ausgehend von der satzkonstituierenden Funktion des Prädikats (Valenz) die Struktur von einfachen Äußerungen (Satzglieder, Satzmodelle) und von Wortgruppen (einschließlich des Formensystems ihrer 'Kerne': Substantiv, Adjektiv, Adverb, Pronomen).

Teil 2 liefert zunächst eine onomasiologisch perspektivierte funktionale Darstellung komplexer Äußerungen, sodann die syntaktische Beschreibung der Gliedsätze und ihrer syntaktischen Äquivalente (Infinitiv-, Gerundial-, Partizipialkonstruktionen, Satzreduktionen, Nominalisierungen).

Teil 3 stellt die Satzgliedstellung, die Hervorhebungskonstruktionen, die Passivkonstruktionen sowie die kommunikativen Satzarten als funktional motivierte Abwandlungen der in den Teilen 1 und 2 beschriebenen Strukturen dar. Die sprachlichen Belege entstammen portugiesischer, brasilianischer, angolanischer und mosambikanischer Belletristik, Sachprosa und Presse. Besonderheiten der einzelnen Varietäten werden in gesonderten Paragraphen oder Abschnitten behandelt.

Obwohl die Darstellung auf neueren Ergebnissen der linguistischen Forschung basiert, wird sie weitgehend in einer bekannten und verständlichen Termonologie dargeboten.
