The Duck Commander Devotional

About this book

This 365-day devotional contains a brief message, an inspirational scripture and a prayer for each day of the year. With contributions from all the members of the family, from patriarch Will and his wife Kay, to their four sons (Willie, Jase, Jep and Alan) and their beautiful wives and children, not to forget Uncle Si, this book reveals the faith that lies at the core of all that they do. The Robertson clan's flair for down-home wisdom and wit has rarely been better illustrated than in this volume, which is sure to appeal to their many fans. We even get to hear from Martin and Godwin, the only two non-family members who are regulars on the show.

GIVING WITHOUT JUDGMENT

duck
ā€œDo not judge, and you will not be judged. Do not condemn, and you will not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven. Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.ā€
—LUKE 6:37–38
MY WIFE IS really awesome about giving money or food to anybody she sees on the side of the road, and I used to get upset about it. I would tell her, ā€œThey are just going go buy alcohol or drugs with that.ā€ She would reply, ā€œIt’s not our place to judge, but to show them kindness just as Christ has done to us.ā€ And you know what? She was right! The way Jesus lived and His message while here on Earth had much to do with our hearts toward other people—especially the downtrodden. It’s always better to err on the side of generosity than to withhold kindness because we are unsure of how our gift will be used. Our job is to follow Jesus’ example; He will worry about the rest.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, help us to give with joyful and nonjudgmental hearts to those who are in need. Lord, we expect nothing in return, only that You be pleased with our faithfulness. Amen!

IMPRINTED ON OUR HEARTS

duck
Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.
—PROVERBS 22:6, KJV
BEING A MOM of four children, I try so hard to instill God’s Word in their little hearts. We’re blessed to also have a family that lives by God’s Word. It’s very daunting to know that Jep’s and my influence on our children could hinder or help them in knowing our Lord and Savior. It’s a huge responsibility! But I trust that if we share God’s Word with them and live our lives by His Word, it will forever be imprinted on their hearts. Whenever I fall short of my goals, God’s Word is there in the back of my mind, calling me to repentance and guiding me to wisdom. The truth is that as we train our children, we are also being trained ourselves. Growing in God’s Word is a lifelong process. I’m thankful that our family travels this road together.
Prayer
Lord, I thank You for Your Word, which guides us and teaches us Your ways. I pray that Jep and I will stay committed to sharing Your Word with our children every day. I pray that it will be imprinted on all of our hearts and never leave. Even if our children go astray, I pray that the Word they have learned will pierce their heart, calling them back to You.

THREE LICKS

duck
Whoever spares the rod hates their children, but the one who loves their children is careful to discipline them.
—PROVERBS 13:24
WHEN WE FOUR boys were growing up, the ā€œRobertson Ruleā€ for misbehavior was three licks (meaning a belt on the posterior three times) per transgression. Dad says that there were only three grounds for those three licks: (1) disrespecting Mom, (2) fist-fighting with one another, and (3) tearing up perfectly good equipment—meaning his equipment. The ā€œRobertson Ruleā€ had some built-in boundaries that kept discipline from going too far. The limit was three licks, and the offenses were few and well defined. It is never acceptable for parents to hit their children out of anger or without restraint. I respected my dad then for what he was doing, and I respect him now for what he did to help bring discipline to our lives. My parents loved us enough to discipline us, and I have tried to do the same with my children and grandchildren.
Prayer
Father, please guide us in the ways of discipline and help us to be consistent and loving as we guide our families. We pray this prayer through Him, amen.

THE BONDS OF LOVE

duck
But Ruth replied, ā€œDon’t urge me to leave you or to turn back from you. Where you go I will go, and where you stay I will stay. Your people will be my people and your God my God. Where you die I will die, and there I will be buried. May the LORD deal with me, be it ever so severely, if even death separates you and me.ā€
—RUTH 1:16–17
I JUST LOVE THE story of Ruth, don’t you? The most amazing thing about the above words of Ruth is that she said them not to her husband, but to her mother-in-law! I was blessed to have a wonderful mother-in-law. We called Phil’s mother Granny, and she lived on our land for many years. Much of what I know and believe about hospitality and cooking I learned in her kitchen. Even though they were very poor, Granny made sure her children never went hungry for food, but she always wanted them to be hungry for God’s Word—and they all are to this day. Ruth and Naomi teach us about the power of family and the bonds of love. You can cultivate this same kind of love with your in-laws.
Prayer
Father, bless us today with the ability to commit ourselves to those who love us. Help us to carry on the legacy of those who have gone before us or to create a new legacy for future generations. Amen.
—Miss Kay

OUT OF THIS WORLD!

duck
Do not be yoked together with unbelievers. For what do righteousness and wickedness have in common? Or what fellowship can light have with darkness? . . . Therefore, ā€œCome out from them and be separate,ā€ says the Lord.
—2 CORINTHIANS 6:14–17
LIVING IN THIS world is unavoidable, but we do have a choice about how we live. And Scripture is clear about the kind of lifestyle God’s people are to live. Although we have to live in this world, we are called not to be of the world. There should alw...
