CHAPTER ONE
THE PARTY OF CRIME
At about 6:30 p.m. on Friday, January 23, 2014, I was shopping in the Neiman Marcus department store in Washington, D.C. As I browsed the cosmetics, all of a sudden I heard women screaming. One female salesperson yelled, âHeâs hitting him! Stop him!â Startled, I looked to my left. About twenty feet away, I saw a young black man who appeared to be about eighteen years old holding a Chanel handbag with the store security chain and sensor attached and hitting a tall white male sales associate. Within seconds, two security guards and the salesperson wrestled the criminal to the floor and attempted to place him in handcuffs. He resisted, trying to play the victim, murmuring something to the security guards that prompted them to ask him if he was all right. After about two minutes, the three were able to get the young man in handcuffs.
Later, the sales associates confirmed that the black man had been trying to steal the handbag. He had committed a crime but immediately turned around and wanted to be treated like a victim. But what gave this young thug the idea that he could steal a valuable item, physically attack a store employee, and then pose as the injured party?
Short answer: the Democrats.
Democrat politicians and their allies have given criminals a license to play the victimâthus enabling more crime. Democrats all the way up to the president of the United States treat criminals with sympathy, and the police with suspicion. Remember in the first year of Barack Obamaâs presidency, when he saw fit to opine on the arrest of black Harvard professor Henry Louis Gates, saying that âthe Cambridge police acted stupidlyâ and bringing up the âlong history in this country of African Americans and Latinos being stopped by law enforcement disproportionatelyâ? Remember when Democrat New York mayor Bill de Blasio explained how he warns his biracial son against the police? The mythâperpetuated by Democrats in office and their race-hustling sidekicks like de Blasio buddy Al Sharpton, and sold to the public by their willing allies in the mediaâis that law enforcement is waging a war on young black men in this country, resorting to unjustified âracial profiling,â and putting innocent âunarmed black menâ in constant jeopardy of being shot by the police.
But this is just a convenient fictionâconvenient to the Democrats who want to keep the black vote theyâve had for fifty years on lockdown by inflaming racial grievances. The reality is that young black men are âtargetedâ by the police for a simple reasonâbecause, tragically, they commit more crime than their fellow citizens.
The District of Columbia police departmentâs Twitter feed reflects this same reality. One glance at it reveals innumerable references to B/M (black male) suspects. While the Democrats would have Americans believe blacks are being singled out by racist police, @DCPoliceDept tells a very different story. Without exception, every day the D.C. police departmentâs Twitter feed is mostly populated with descriptions of black male suspects wanted for shootings and robberies. Here is a sample of the departmentâs tweets:1

If black males werenât the ones committing so much crime in D.C. and other cities across the nation, perhaps police officers and citizens wouldnât view them with as much suspicion. It is really that simple. The eyewitness descriptions of suspects included in the above D.C. police department tweets indicate the suspects are black males. Why should D.C. police officers go looking for white males who donât fit the description? They shouldnât because that would be STUPID.
But Democrats approach violent crime in America by making excuses for the criminals rather than doing anything to stop them. Democrats love themselves some criminals! In Democratsâ minds, the thug is always right even when heâs wrong. They will do anything and everything to take the side of the thug over law enforcement or the victim.
And that includes black victims. As a matter of fact, the Democratsâ loyal black voters suffer more than white Americans do from the criminals the Democrats have enabled to terrorize our nationâs cities. This demonstrates that black lives really donât matter to Democrats. Blacks arenât as scared of white people harming or killing them as they are scared of other blacks. During the summer of 2013, when the trial for the shooting death of Trayvon Martin took place in Sanford, Florida, I provided commentary for HLNâs Dr. Drew on Call and some CNN programs. One evening after my appearance on Dr. Drew on Call, a black security guard working in CNNâs D.C. bureau walked me to my car. We chatted about the case, as we sometimes did after my appearances, and he told me, âWhen I get off of work and walk out here at night, who do you think Iâm afraid of on the streets? Itâs not the white guys walking around, itâs the black guys because theyâre the ones committing the crimes.â Heâs right. Go to any predominantly black inner-city neighborhood in America and you will find black males not working, hanging out during the day, and committing crimes. You will also find other blacks (everybody else in the neighborhood) living in fear of them. Today, though blacks are only 13 percent of the population, they actually make up a larger percentage of federal and state prisoners (38 percent) than whites (34 percent). Thatâs because black males are responsible for more crimes than any other racial group, and thus they are 6.4 times more likely than white men to be incarcerated. The incarceration rate for blacks hasnât improved since 1960, when blacks accounted for 37 percent of all federal and state prisoners.2 Black men perpetrate criminal offenses including robbery, aggravated assault, and property crimes at a rate thatâs typically two to three times their representation in the population.3
THE BLACK VICTIMS OF DEMOCRAT-ENABLED CRIME
The Democrats would have you believe that white-on-black crimeâand particularly shootings of âunarmed black menâ by racist copsâis out of control. In fact, black crime victims are overwhelmingly suffering violence at the hands of the black criminals the Democrats are giving a pass to. As former New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani famously pointed out on Meet the Press, 93 percent of homicides of black victims are committed by other blacks.4 âMurders with guns are the No. 1 cause of death for African-American men between the ages of 15 and 34,â wrote journalist Juan Williams in the Wall Street Journal,5 citing disturbing data from the Childrenâs Defense Fund: âThe 44,038 black children killed by guns since 1979 (when national data on the age of gun violence victims was first collected) is ânearly 13 times moreâ than all the black people killed by lynching in the 86-year period of 1882 to 1968.â6 Characterizing the murder rate for black Americans as âa national crisis,â the Violence Policy Center found the 2012 homicide victim rate for black males was nearly 10 times that of white males, at 32.78 for 100,000 blacks compared to 3.86 for 100,000 whites. Of the 6,565 black homicide victims that year, 87 percent were male.7 So there actually is a disgraceful epidemic of murders of black men. But theyâre not being perpetrated by the police, racists, or white people in general. More than 90 percent of these homicides of black victims are committed by black criminals.
Yet in the face of these horrifying statistics, Democrats take great umbrage at police departments across America that engage in racial profiling of crime suspects. If blacks, specifically black males, are committing the bulk of crime in the country, why would police officers search for suspects who donât fit that description? As a black woman, do I enjoy being viewed with suspicion on occasion when Iâm shopping in a store? No, but if a significant proportion of black people are going to behave like criminals and thugs, the police will treat us accordingly. And, as a black woman, I would definitely prefer a nasty look from a suspicious security guard to a punch in the head by a fleeing shoplifter.
Distracting attention from the real day-to-day criminal threats to black Americansâ well-beingâand our very livesâwith hysteria about âprofilingâ is just part of the Democratsâ con job. Black-on-black violence has persisted for decades, and for decades it has been completely ignored by the Democrats, who have claimed to be the political saviors of blacks for just as long. Itâs not like the Dems donât know the facts. More than fifty years ago, Daniel Patrick Moynihan, who was then assistant secretary of labor in Lyndon Johnsonâs administration, addressed black-on-black violence in his famous report on problems of the black community, The Negro Family: The Case for National Action: âThe overwhelming number of offenses committed by Negroes are directed toward other Negroes: the cost of crime to the Negro is a combination of that to the criminal and the victim.â8 As was the case then, the black race today is still destroying itself with violenceâhaving been abandoned to that fate by the Democrats, who are supposed to be our champions, but who simply take our votes and give us nothing in return but race-baiting excuses for the criminals who have turned black neighborhoods into nightmares.
I know something about this from firsthand experience. In 1970 my grandfather Arthur E. Baker was gunned down by two armed black teens in the dry cleaning business he owned, Bakerâs Dry Cleaners & Laundromat, in Richmond, Virginia. The young thugs walked in and demanded that my grandfather give them the money in the cash register. When he reached for the handgun he kept under the counter to defend himself, one of them shot him. On a recent trip home to visit my parents, I rummaged through a box of old papers that had belonged to my grandmother Pauline Sarah Baker and discovered a copy of my grandfatherâs death certificate. Neatly folded like a letter, the preserved, slightly yellowed document revealed after all the years what I had never knownâthe details of my grandfatherâs death. William Arthur E. Baker was âshot by an assailantâ between 7:15 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. and died âfrom a gunshot wound of the chestâ (homicide) on November 18, 1970. The certificate gives the time of death as 8:12 p.m. and clearly states that my grandfather was DOA, dead on arrival, when the police appeared at the scene. As I read the certificate for the first time, I wondered if he had died instantly or suffered in agony. My grandfather was sixty-three years old. Just as Moynihan had predicted in that same report on âthe Negro familyâ five years earlier, the breakdown of the black family was leading to a rise in violent crime among black men in solidly black neighborhoods across the country.
At the time of my grandfatherâs death, the black middle-class neighborhood where the dry cleaner and my grandparentsâ home were located was changing, and my grandmother Pauline was worried something bad could happen to my grandfather working late nights at the cleaners by himself. To make more money, my grandfather had installed a laundromat service. As my mother explained, his dry cleaning business was falling off a little because of the new popularity of polyester clothing, which didnât need to be dry cleaned as often as clothes made of natural fibers such as cotton or wool. To make money from the laundromat, he had to keep the cleaners open late in the evening so people could do their laundry after coming home from work. The day I found his death certificate, I also came across a crumpled-up black-and-white eight-by-ten photo of my grandfather standing with his left hand resting on one of the newly installed washing machines and smiling proudly. Itâs one of the few photos we have of him, and when I showed it to my mother, she said, âThatâs my daddy,â and beamed like she was a little girl again.
Ironically, the thing my grandfather did to make more money was the very thing that led to his tragic death. Those two armed black teens knew the dry cleaner would make a good target for a robbery because it was open late, my grandfather was the only person working, and there would be cash on hand.
I have...
