In diesem Katalog zu einer Ausstellung der Abguss-Sammlung Antiker Plastik der Freien Universität Berlin werden antike Skulpturen erstmalig literarischen und epigraphischen Zeugnissen des 6. Jh. v. Chr. bis 11. Jh. n. Chr. gleichgewichtig gegenübergestellt. An einer repräsentativen Auswahl von über 40 Exponaten und den dazugehörigen Schriftquellen diskutiert die Ausstellung wichtige Probleme von Text und Skulptur und leistet auf diese Weise einen Beitrag zum besseren Verständnis der antiken Plastik. Unter anderem wird den Fragen nachgegangen, worauf die Benennung einer Statue, ihre Zuschreibung an einen Künstler und ihre Datierung basieren.
Der Katalog ist im Rahmen eines interdisziplinären Projekts entstanden, das zur Aufgabe hat, das veraltete Standardwerk von Johannes Overbeck, Die antiken Schriftquellen zur Geschichte der bildenden Künste bei den Griechen (1868), zu ersetzen und mittels Übersetzung, philologisch-epigraphischem und archäologischem Kommentar, Literaturnachweisen und Abbildungen den aktuellen Bedürfnissen anzupassen. Der "Neue Overbeck" wird 2009 in vier Bänden bei Walter de Gruyter erscheinen.
