Der Band setzt die Ausgabe der Tagebücher fort, die Marie von Ebner-Eschenbach (1830-1916) durch viele Jahrzehnte führte. Insgesamt sind 36 Jahrgänge aus den Jahren 1862 bis 1909 im Mährischen Landesarchiv Brünn erhalten, weitere (bis 1916) von fremder Hand überliefert. Diese Tagebücher sind, der literarischen Bedeutung ihrer Autorin entsprechend, in mehrfacher Hinsicht bedeutungsvoll: biographisch, werkgenetisch, literarhistorisch (mit einer Fülle von Aphorismen) und - das Leben einer Adeligen in der k.k. Monarchie dokumentierend - kulturgeschichtlich.

Der fünfte Band der "Tagebücher", der die Zeit von 1898 bis 1905 umspannt, ist von besonders großem kulturgeschichtlichen Interesse. Nach dem Tode ihres Mannes Moriz von Ebner-Eschenbach im Januar 1898 reist die Dichterin im Herbst des gleichen Jahres zum ersten Mal nach Rom. Diesem ersten mehrmonatigen Aufenthalt folgen in den nächsten Jahren weitere Besuche. In ihren Tagebüchern dokumentiert die Ebner sehr genau ihre Eindrücke. Es wird deutlich, wie sehr sie darum bemüht ist, sich ihren eigenen Zugang zur kulturellen Tradition dieser Stadt und ihrer kulturhistorischen Bedeutung zu erschließen. Als 'Beilage' sind diesem Band der Tagebücher Marie von Ebner-Eschenbachs Reiseimpressionen "Aus Rom. An meine Freunde" beigegeben, die 1900 in der "Gartenlaube" zum ersten und bislang einzigen Mal erschienen sind. Durch den Vergleich mit den ersten Tagebuchnotizen läßt sich eindrucksvoll der Umformungsprozeß zur literarischen Gestaltung ihres Rom-Erlebnisses in den Briefen "Aus Rom" verfolgen.
