Der Band setzt die Ausgabe der Tagebücher fort, die Marie von Ebner-Eschenbach (1830-1916) durch viele Jahrzehnte führte. Insgesamt sind 36 Jahrgänge aus den Jahren 1962 bis 1909 im Staatsarchiv Brünn erhalten, weitere (bis 1916) von fremder Hand überliefert. Diese Tagebücher sind, der literarischen Bedeutung der Autorin entsprechend, in mehrfacher Hinsicht bedeutungsvoll: biographisch, werkgenetisch, literaturhistorisch (mit einer Fülle von Aphorismen) und - das Leben einer Adeligen in der k.k. Monarchie dokumentierend - kulturgeschichtlich.

Die acht Jahre, die in diesem vierten Band dokumentiert werden, sind vor allem durch zwei Aspekte von besonderem Interesse. Marie von Ebner-Eschenbach wird nun innerhalb der zeitgenössischen literarischen Szene zu einer der bedeutendsten und geachtetsten Schriftstellerinnen des deutschsprachigen Raumes. Die Jahre zwischen 1890 und 1897 zeigen die Ebner-Eschenbach unermüdlich an der Arbeit an ihrem Werk, wobei immer wieder höchst instruktive Einblicke in die Werkstatt der Dichterin zu gewinnen sind. Es wird deutlich, wie sehr sie dazu neigt, in der Konzeption ihrer Werke auf das Urteil des engeren Familien- und Freundeskreises zu hören, um sich aber dann doch immer wieder auf ihr eigenes literarisches Gefühl zu verlassen. Der zweite Aspekt, den es in den Tagebuchaufzeichnungen dieser Jahre hervorzuheben gilt, ist das wache politische Interesse der Ebner-Eschenbach, vor allem ihre entschiedene Ablehnung des aufkommenden Antisemitismus.
