The Dictionary of Pan-African Pentecostalism, Volume One

North America

About this book

This volume is the first in a series of volumes surveying the important names, movements, and institutions that have been significant in forging black renewal movements in various contexts worldwide. In this volume the entries cover the more than 150 identifiable Holiness, Pentecostal, Charismatic, Neo-Pentecostal, and quasi-Pentecostal bodies within the United States and Canada. In addition, the dictionary contains entries on the important people, places, events, and theological and secular issues that shaped these groups over their histories, some of which go back more than a century. This and subsequent volumes will be invaluable tools for students and scholars of the history of Pentecostalism.

Zion Gospel Churches of the Apostolic Faith
A Oneness Pentecostal body founded in 1938 as Zion Assembly Church in the Jamaica area of Queens, New York by Bishop Judge Pierce Shields. Shields pastored Refuge Church of Christ, a congregation of the Church Of Our Lord Jesus Christ of the Apostolic Faith that was organized in 1927 in the Jamaica section of the borough of Queens in New York City. When Shields broke away from the parent body that congregation became the headquarters of the new body.
Sometime later, the organization was renamed Zion Gospel Church, Inc. and Shields assumed the position of general bishop. There are congregations in New York, Ohio, and Virginia.
In 1996 his son, Rev. Dr. Del P. Shields, a well-known entrepreneur and radio broadcaster, assumed the pastorate of the congregation. Building on his business and media expertise, the younger Shields continued his role as a spokesman for the African-American community and has moved the congregation to be actively involved with other congregations in taking on a variety of social issues.
