Bei der Vulgata handelt es sich um die seit der SpĂ€tantike am weitesten verbreitete lateinische Übersetzung der Bibel, die ca. 380–400 von Hieronymus erstellt wurde und als das Zentralwerk der europĂ€ischen Geistes- und Theologiegeschichte gelten kann. Da sie in entscheidenden Teilen von den Originalbibeltexten abweicht, bietet sie einen wichtigen Einblick in die christliche Theologie der SpĂ€tantike, des Mittelalters und der frĂŒhen Neuzeit. Die Römisch-Katholische Kirche hat Hieronymus' lateinische Übersetzung ĂŒber Jahrhunderte als maßgebende Version der Heiligen Schrift angesehen und als Quelle verwendet. Der lateinische Originaltext der Vulgata folgt der heute maßgeblichen 5. Auflage der Ausgabe von Robert Weber und Roger Gryson. Die deutsche Übersetzung wird völlig neu erstellt von einem Team namhafter Klassischer Philologen und Theologen, das durch einen interdisziplinĂ€ren theologisch-philologischen Beirat unterstĂŒtzt wird. Die Koordination und die Auswahl der Übersetzer und des Beirats ĂŒbernahm der in Chur, Schweiz, ansĂ€ssige Vulgata-Verein. Ziel des Übersetzungsprojekts ist es, Hieronymus' Sprache und Interpretation der Bibel unabhĂ€ngig von der theologischen Übersetzungstradition mit all ihren Abweichungen von den hebrĂ€ischen und griechischen Originaltexten herauszuarbeiten. Es entsteht so eine Übersetzung, die wissenschaftlich höchsten AnsprĂŒchen genĂŒgt und ein Standardwerk sowohl fĂŒr Klassische Philologen als auch fĂŒr Theologen darstellt. Das Werk umfasst ca. 4500 Seiten in 5 BĂ€nden.
