Recognizing Burn-Out
Most of us, as children, are brought up believing four basic misconceptions regarding our gender and the purposes and behaviors that should be lived out and demonstrated as a man or woman. First off, we should always put hard work first and relaxation or play second. Secondly, we need to have our lives (and the lives of our families) completely maintained and controlled. Men are given a huge load as the provider and protector in the family unit as well. We are also expected to know precisely what we want out of our lives and have a plain to attain those desires. Lastly, we must focus on moving up in all of areas mentioned above at all times through any means of self- improvement necessary.
The problem with falling for the conditioning in the ideas above is equal for both sexes; these unrealistic aspirations for perfection drive us to accept and live with situations in our lives and careers that result in the severe burn-out we are talking about. While we virtually “run in place” in an effort to acquire the material luxuries the world has to offer, all the while believing we will finally achieve the happiness we seek, we are really driving ourselves to exhaustion mentally, emotionally, spiritually, and physically. We also suffer inner consequences that are even harder to overcome, such as loss of self-trust, confidence, and esteem.
We must learn that if we want to find our own purpose, our own unique niche, we must disregard the comments, feelings, and expectations that others have about us. We must begin to practice listening to our own inner voice, the one that directs us in the way we alone are to go. We must practice this until it is a lifestyle holistically for us. The things our inner voice tells us to do are the things that will lead us to true contentment and happiness in our personal and professional lives.
If any of us miss the voice of our own calling we will unavoidably focus on pursuits that were simply never meant to be. We are out of our intended element, and we find ourselves miserable. What do we expect? It is much like being a foreigner in another country without a friend to guide us properly. If you have no idea who or what you are or are meant to be, you are not living a life that is true to self. You will become exhausted with living it.
Which Kind of Burn-Out is It?
Burn-out, depression, fatigue, dread, or whatever you decide to call it, there are four main types. Read on and find out which category you fall under if you are feeling the effects of burn-out:
Burn-out from Day to Day Parenting
Here we are referring to the result of the same day to day routine. There is typically no relief, and it is mostly experienced by stay-at-home moms and dads, or any single parent for that matter. It is easy to see how this can happen due to drudgery, particularly if the individual in the parenting position turned their back on career choices to stay at home with the children. An intense feeling of having no control and being constantly in demand and taken advantage of contribute to reaching burnout frequently with this type.
Work or Career Obsession (Workaholic)
In this category we have individuals who are filled with work or career-centered zeal. Whether it is a job outside the home, or taking care of their home and family, these people are dedicated, pouring every last bit of themselves into their efforts. They have little to no time to spend on their own dreams or desires, much less to even have a peaceful bath, and they wind up exhausted, angry, and oftentimes depressed. They do, however, love to stay busy, and are effective when it comes to finding solutions to the issues at hand. A fine balance between work and play is needed here if any professional or personal growth is desired.
A Counterproductive Atmosphere at Work
If you are in a position that does not allow you to express your talent or creativity, or if there is negativity in the air or people who are nasty or difficult, you may experience burn-out quickly, even if it is a job you love.
The Angels & the Vixens; the Drags and the Warriors
As a general rule, males and females, both in the workplace and life, fall under one of two categories: Angels or Vixens and Drags and Warriors. Angels and Warriors are rule-followers. They are obedient to parents and other authority figures, and they typically live a life that would be compared to “walking the straight and narrow”. They are able to focus on a dream and press forward to take the necessary steps to bring the dream to pass. Vixens and Drags, on the other hand, are the rebels of the in our lives and around us. They do the opposite of what they are told simply because they can. Most of the time they have no real reason for their defiance; they simply act for the sake of having control over the situation. The careers chosen by both types of individuals mentioned above are alike in a very important sense:they will typically make job choices based on the things that are expected of them by others. They are acting out of fear, stress, and insecurity. Working in the job or career they have chosen will lead to inevitable and frequent burn-out.
It’s Time to Snap Out of It!
Perhaps as you have been reading this you have come to the realization that you are experiencing burn-out at some level. This realization should be embraced by you, regardless of the pain and exhaustion it has consisted of. Now you know what needs to be done, and you can begin the process of identifying and chasing your dreams, thereby living the life you were meant to live. Burn-out is a clear cut road sign which is telling you that you are going the wrong route. It signifies the need for you sit down and begin to look at your life from both an inner and outer perspective, which will help you begin to see what needs to change. By taking the steps necessary as they relate to the changes that need to be made, you are taking the first steps in finding out not only your true calling as far as your career path in this life, but also in your day to day lifestyle and routine. You will begin to become familiar with who you want and need to really be as an individual.
Realization that you are experiencing one of the four types of burn-out is a sure sign that your goals and focus have gone askew, if they have not become non-existent. There is only one way to realign, and this consists of finding out who you really are as a human being, what provides you with contentment and happiness, and pursue those things.
Adjusting and Setting Your Personal Focus
The first order of business is to take your eyes off the external, material things of life and become more introspective. Find out what your moral character truly consists of. Break down the right from wrongs that have roots in your very core. This is who you truly are. Once you begin to discover and get to know this person, the life dynamic will begin to take on a much easier flow, as you will be able to ride with the waves of your identity rather than living antagonistically toward them. Now you are prepared to make wise decisions based on a combination of your present knowledge and your future considerations, and you will be able to begin to trust yourself to do so properly.
When we are able to embrace the peaks and valleys of life as they come, we find ourselves truly in harmony with the people and things around us. This permits us to freely enjoy every situation and moment life hands us, and it is through these things we find our purpose.
How do we get the job done? How do we get to the point when feeling alive happens every day; it is no longer something we haven’t experienced since high school or college? We first need to look for something that is important to us, something that holds some kind of meaning. We need to then set our focus on that thing and maintain that focus diligently.
Here are some ideas that have proven effective when practiced by others who are making the same changes:
You dictate your own atmospheric conditions.
Be vigilant in choosing who you spend your time with, what ...
