The Garden of Divine Songs and Collected Poetry of Hryhory Skovoroda

About this book

Hryhory Skovoroda is considered by many as the first great Slavic philosopher and poet. Written over a period stretching from the 1750s until 1785, his The Garden of Divine Songs is a unique collection of 30 poems, featuring a complex system of strophic structures and with only a few of the songs written in a traditional way. Skovoroda never repeats one and the same strophic structure; this being the case, his Garden of Divine Songs according to writer-scholar Valery Shevchuk functions as a "practical guide to the art of poetry", exemplifying all the meters and strophic patterns that were possible in Ukrainian poetry of that time. The poet makes masterful use of the accomplishments of academic poetry; the so-called "songs of the world" are the most prominent poems in this collection. These songs are an expression of Skovoroda's views in poetic form, and many ideas from The Garden of Divine Songs, such as the search for happiness in the world in song 21, would later form the basis for some of Skovoroda's philosophical treatises. Skovoroda's originality, and his ability to approach the most cardinal problems of human existence, stem from his capacity to combine known motifs, borrowed from literary sources such as classical texts, the Bible, and ancient Ukrainian poetic works, with his own system of thinking that focuses on his philosophy of the heart. The complete poems of Skovoroda are appearing in their entirety here in English for the first time, accompanied by a guest introduction by prominent Ukrainian writer Valery Shevchuk. THE GARDEN OF DIVINE SONGS

Blossoming from the seeds of the Holy Bible

FIRST SONG

Composed in 1757 according to this virtue:
“Blessed are the undefiled in the way, who walk in the law of the Lord.”

People dread descending to the grave to decay,
So that afterward they do not partake [in turn]
Of the place where eternal fire burns;
But death is sacred, our wicked life ends,
Transfiguring our wicked strife into peace.
O, this sacred death!

He who has a conscience clear not even
a blazing Perun does fear!
He does not burn in hellfire[’s tears],
He lives the life of paradise.
O, sin gives birth to death! It brings a living death,
From death comes hell; hunger burns the soul.
O, this savage death!

Blessed, O blessed is he from the cradle
Who has dedicated himself to Christ,
Day and night he reflects in His word,
Having accepted the good yoke and light burden,
He who becomes inured to this, who makes it habit[’s trait].
O, this holy fate!

He who has partaken of this sweetness can
Never plummet into the profane, no!
In nakedness, in misfortune he will not yearn;

Neither fire nor sword will separate him [firm];
Pleasure all the more leads him astray.
It does not lay upon his heart.
Except for him, who allows it to do so [in part].
He let us come to understand costly temptation.

Christ, my life, you died for me!
I should have given You my early years,
I give You all the rest!
Cleanse the stone of my heart. Kindle your flame in it.
And bring death to the passions and evil pleasures,
I live for you my light [my treasure].

And when I arise from my sins, when I adorn the heavenly flesh,
You will abide in me, and I will settle in you,
I will be sated by that sweetness,
Deliberating with you, taking counsel [here],
Like the sunset, like the rising sun.
O! This is an age of golden years!

1757
The End.

SECOND SONG

From this seed:
“and whatsoever thou shalt bind
on earth shall be bound in heaven.”
Leave soon, o spirit of mine, all earthly places!
Ascend, my spirit, onto the mountains where Holy truth dwells,
Where peace and silence eternally reign,
Where the land glows, where the light is beyond reach.

Leave your earthly sorrows! and the vanity of worldly things!
Be pure, at least for a short time, so you can fly upward,
Where the Lord of Jacob dwel...
