Combustion

About this book

Bradford, in the month of Ramadan.
Shaz, a local garage mechanic, is trying to keep his business going despite the terrible scandal of Asian men involved in grooming young girls for sex in the area.
A protest march through the city is planned and Samina, Shaz's sister wants to make a speech at a counter-demonstration for Peace.
Shaz just wants a quiet life so that his prospective in-laws will let him marry their beautiful daughter, but as the city gets swept up in the protest, his world gets turned upside down.
Asif Khan's debut play is a fabulously comic take on the combustion surrounding young British Muslim lives.

SHAZ
It’s time.
ALI
Iftari?
SHAZ
Yeah.
ALI
Fucking yes!
SHAZ
Oi… you’re not supposed to swear during this time/
ALI
Is Faisal not back?
SHAZ
Nope.
ALI
Where the fuck is he?! It’s only round the corner!
SHAZ
Sabhar [patience] OK? Here, I’ve got some kajoor [dates].
Shaz plays the Azaan [call to prayer] from his phone. They say the prayer to break fast, and eat the dates. Also water. Silence.
ALI
Tastes like magic.
Faisal comes in with a plastic carrier containing three takeaways.
ALI
What the hell were you doing all this time?!
FAISAL
Soz bro, there was a humongous queue ’n that. Everybody breaking their fast innit.
Ali grabs the bag.
ALI
You got ma chicken wrap as well?
FAISAL
Yeah.
SHAZ
Sit down Fes… have a kajoor.
Faisal breaks his fast with a date. Ali takes his food out and starts eating. Shaz takes out his own and Faisal’s.
ALI
So what’s happening on the rishta [marriage] front?
Beat.
SHAZ
Nothing.
ALI
Don’t talk shit. I heard you and your mum in the kitchen.
Beat.
SHAZ
I’ve got summat on the go, but I’m not talking about it.
ALI
What? Why?
SHAZ
Nazzir [evil eye].
ALI
Shut up Nazzir! You can tell me, I’m like your brother.
FAISAL
Yeah tell us bro.
Beat.
SHAZ
Uncle Akram knows a good family who have a daughter looking for rishta, so mum’s set summat up for tomorrow.
ALI
What’s her name? What she do?
SHAZ
Naila. Pharmacist.
FAISAL
Nice!
SHAZ
Wears the hijab ’n that.
ALI
MashAllah! You got a photo?
SHAZ
Yeah.
ALI
Show us.
SHAZ
Nope.
FAISAL
Does she have any sisters?
SHAZ
Why?
FAISAL
Could do with a hand bro.
ALI
Faisal’s desperate man.
SHAZ
Your mum still got you on that site?
FAISAL
Yeah bro. I’ve gotta good profile on it ’n that. It’s just…
SHAZ
What?
FAISAL
Once they see ma photo they stop responding.
ALI
What photo you using?
FAISAL
This one. (Faisal pulls out his phone to show his photo)
ALI
That’s fucking horrible man! Take another. And don’t smile on it.
SHAZ
Show me Fes.
Faisal shows Shaz.
SHAZ
It’s alright. I’d say wear a shirt instead. Makes you look successful. And take the shot outside. Better light.
ALI
Bad advice with his face.
SHAZ
Don’t be a twat Ali.
FAISAL
It’s OK Shaz… he’s just fooling around ’n that.
ALI
