Zur Beanwortun dieser Frage werden in Textabschnitten aus der Erzählliteratur drei linguistische Ebenen der Informationsentwicklung identifiziert und deren sprachliche Umsetzungen mit Hilfe von Ansätzen aus Textlinguistik, Pragmatik, semantik, Syntax und Psycholinguistik beschrieben und analysiert. auf dieser Basis werden die Ergebnisse der unterschiedlichen Textabschnitte miteinander verglichen, um festzustellen, welche Art von sprachlicher Realisation text- oder autorenspezifisch ist und welche Realisationen als prinzipielle sprachliche Muster der Informationsentwicklung in Erzähltexten angesehen werden können.die durch die analysen gewonnenen Ergebnisse lassen unterschiedliche Anwendungen zu: Die Beleuchtung der Resultate vor dem Hintergrund linguistischer Theorien erlaubt einerseits eine Bewertung dieser Theorien, anderseits lassen sich auf der Basis theoretischer Überlegungen Rückschlüsse auf die Eigenschaften der einzelnen Textabschnitte ziehen. das umfangreiche Analysematerial dient weiterhin einer textgrammatischen Beschreibung der Textsorte Erzählliteratur im Spezifischen und des Englischen im allgemeinen. darüber hinaus kann das Wissen um das Zusammengehen bestimmter linguistischer Eigenschaften für die Klassifikation von Textsorten genutzt werden, wie sie beispielsweise für eine automatische textsortenzuordnung oder auch für die automatische Sprachproduktion hilfreich ist.
