Goals of the Exercise
1. Acknowledge that fear and anxiety are normal and expected reactions prior to deployment.
2. Identify and discuss the nature of the anxiety related to the actual deployment.
3. Discuss expectations and realities regarding communication while deployed.
4. Develop a plan of how to recognize birthdays, anniversaries, and graduations for loved ones.

Suggestions for Processing this Exercise with Service Members
The âAm I Ready for Deployment?â activity is a companion unit to âHelping My Family Prepare for My Deployment.â Where that activity focuses strictly on practical preparation such as making financial and legal arrangements, this one is written with the goal of helping the service member and his or her family prepare on an intra- and interpersonal level. It can also be considered a unit to be used in conjunction with the two activities listed for Parenting Problems Related to Deployment. Follow-up could include reviewing the list with the service member, possibly in a joint session including his/her significant other, as well as bibliotherapy using books listed in Appendix A of The Veterans and Active Duty Military Psychotherapy Treatment Planner.
EXERCISE XXIX.A Am I Ready for Deployment?
There are many things to do and think about when you're getting ready to be deployed and it can be easy for the strictly practical matters, like finances and household operations, to take up all your time and energy. Those are vital, but it's also critical for you to prepare emotionally and have a plan addressing how you'll stay in commu-nication with your significant other and with your children, if you have children.
