Formation and Reactions of Acetals and Related Species

Mechanisms and energetics for BrĂžnsted-acid-catalysed glucose condensations, dehydration, and isomerization reactions have been reviewed.1 Recent developments in the asymmetric synthesis of spiroketals have been reviewed and the potential for further application of transition metal catalysis and organocatalysis has been highlighted.2

Hemiacetal formation from formaldehyde and methanol has been studied by intrinsic reactivity analysis at the B3LYP/6-311++G(d,p) level and the beneficial combined assistance of watermolecules and BrĂžnsted acids has been quantified.3 Theoretical study of hemiacetal formation from methanol with derivatives of CH3CHO (X = H, F, Cl, Br, and I) has shown that the energy barrier can be reduced by a catalytic molecule (MeOH or hemiacetal product).4
