This is an annotated bibliography of Catholic books in English printed abroad or secretly in England at a time when Catholic printing was prohibited in England and such books, when discovered by the authorities, were seized and destroyed. It includes all the 930 items listed in the authors' A Catalogue of Catholic Books in English..., 1956 (A&R) except for a handful which, for reasons of consistency, were described in volume I of the present work (Scolar Press, 1989), and it adds a further twenty-five on which information has come to light more recently. The annotations, historical, literary and bibliographical, are very much fuller than those in A&R and include a vast amount of evidence now brought together for the first time. The true authors of many anonymous and pseudonymous books are identified and many books issued with a false imprint, or no imprint at all, are assigned to particular presses. In each entry, up to fifteen locations are given where known. A concordance links the entries with those in A&R to facilitate cross-reference from one to the other, and indexes of titles, printers and publishers, and persons (including foreign authors) mentioned in the text are provided. The volume concludes with a short list of Addenda and Corrigenda to volume I.

   A transl. of Tableaux sacrés des figures mystiques … de l'Eucharistie. The translator, who also signs his preface with the initials C.A., is probably the same as the translator of no. I. Gillow’s attribution to Charles Apsley (vol. 1, p. 54) is a mistaken guess disproved by the translator’s statement in the preface that he has never been to France: Apsley was in France in 1589 (see DD 1, 2, p. 223). Hawkes’s suggestion that the translator was Christopher Anderton (LIB. 1927, p. 168) lacks evidence. Pr. [secretly in England, press no. 18]. In some copies, e.g. DAI, DE, the original 20-line errata list has been cancelled by pasting over a fresh leaf containing a 31-line list.

   The poem was occasioned by the proposed marriage between Prince Charles and the Infanta Maria of Spain. The failure to conclude the match in September 1623 was doubtless the reason why books 3-5, if written, were never published. The author’s name appears on sig.*2^v at the end of the verse dedication to the Prince. A prose dedication in Spanish to the Infanta ends (sig.*4^v): ‘Deste Conuento de San Iuan Baptista de Anuers a 12. de Nouembre 1623’. Pr. [Antwerp ?].    Anon. The evidence for Alfield is given by sou. pp. 376-9. See also RH April 1959, pp. 66-69; & October 1962, pp. 251-56, where the parts played in the book’s make-up by Stephen Vallenger and Henry Walpole, and the printer himself, Richard Verstegan (also known as Rowland) are discussed. 6. 5 Allen, William, Cardinal An admonition to the nobility and people of England and Ireland concerninge the present war res made for the execution of his Holines sentence, by the highe and mightie Kinge Catholike of Spaine. By the Cardinal of Englande. 8°. n.p., 1588. L.; BUTE. ST.YK.
   For the history of this book, written when an invasion by Spanish armed forces was imminent, see CRS 21, pp. 166, et seq.; The Month, April 1948, pp. 232, et seq.; MIL. vol. 1, p. 111. Though Allen’s surname is not mentioned, there is a woodcut of his arms on the titlepage, the words ‘the Cardinal of Englande’ can refer to no one else since there was no other English cardinal at this date, and the text begins with the Latin recital of his titles as Cardinal Priest of St. Martin in Montibus. Charges by contemporaries, repeated by some later writers, that the real author was Robert Persons, are unsubstantiated by any evidence. The Pope’s sentence referred to in the title was a bull of Sixtus V drawn up but never, in fact, issued. Pr. [probably at Antwerp]. For a broadside summary of the work, see no. 10 below.    Answers the proclamations of 15 July 1580 (STC 8124) and 10 January 1581 (STC 8127) against his two foundations, at Rome and at Douai (now temporarily at Rheims). Signed by Allen at the end.    Anon. The earliest printed work on the English martyrs. It was drawn up by Allen when he was Rector of the English College then at Rheims from first-hand reports sent to him from England.
