CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE

Anatomic terminology is used daily in veterinary hospitals to facilitate communication among members of the veterinary staff. It also allows accurate information to be recorded in patients’ medical records. For example, the location of a laceration or bone break, the correct position of an animal for a radiograph, or the site of a surgical incision can all be described using anatomic terminology. It is extremely important that anatomic terminology becomes part of your everyday vocabulary.

INTRODUCTION

Suppose you are an astronaut on board the space shuttle shortly after launch and you hear the commander tell the pilot that MECO was about to occur before SRB sep. Should you be concerned? To answer you have to know what the terms “MECO” and “SRB sep” mean. They seem as foreign to us as anatomic terminology probably seems to an astronaut or rocket scientist, yet both allow quick, accurate communication of important facts.

ANATOMIC PLANES

Anatomic planes describe imaginary slices through animal bodies (Figure 1-1 and Box 1-1). We use them as reference points to describe positions, or to indicate how a part of the body is being viewed.
