A NOTE ON THE CAPTIONS

The views are basically arranged geographically from north to south and, at each north-south level, from east to west (see the maps on pages vi and vii). The final element in each caption (in parentheses) is the Barnes-Crosby sequence number (in the form “BC-49”); these numbers are used in the exhibition and should be referred to whenever contacting the Chicago Historical Society for reproductions, further information, etc.

When the main subject of a photograph is a building (or a group of buildings), the caption includes the following information wherever applicable: chief name of building; alternate names (that is, earlier or later ownership, etc.) in parentheses; address; year of opening of building (these years are not the dates of the photographs); year of demolition, if known (in a range of dates, such as “1891–1936,” the first year is that of the opening, the second year that of demolition); architect or architectural firm (without the word “architect”). Thus for example, caption 38, is to be interpreted as: “Andrews Building; also known as Herald Building; located at 161–65 West Washington Street; opened 1891; demolished 1936; designed by the architectural firm of Burnham & Root.”
