À propos de ce livre

`No list of twentieth-century landmarks in music reference would be valid without Bachmann's Encyclopedia.`—American Reference Book Annual
`If there were such an award as one for the best reprint of our day, surely this book by Alberto Bachmann would be way up front with the leaders.`—American String Teacher
Of the many books written about the violin, none offers the breadth and scope of this renowned reference. First published in 1925, it remains unsurpassed as a source of essential information on all aspects of the instrument. It traces the evolution of technique from the 1800s onward, in addition to examining the violin's construction and manufacture, listing American and European makers, and offering a biographic section on chamber music ensembles.
Seventy-three rare photographs complement the text, which features an introduction by the legendary violinist Eugène Ysaÿe and a glossary of music and musical terms. Written by a concert violinist and composer, this remarkable handbook is a must for professionals, amateurs, teachers, and students.

CHAPTER XXV
A LIST OF MUSIC FOR THE VIOLIN
The following list of music for the violin—either as a solo instrument or in conjunction with other instruments—does not lay claim to being complete in the sense that it includes all the compositions for the violin which have been published up to the present time, because it would require several large volumes to catalogue merely the solo compositions and transcriptions which have been written for the instrument.
On the other hand, the author believes that it will be of service to all those who are interested in violin music because it presents in categorical form all of the great violin works and a goodly proportion of the lesser works, thereby enabling the performer, the teacher, the student or the amateur to seek and find successfully the compositions which he may require for any purpose.
The list divides itself into two groups; the first comprises solo music and concerted works, including:
Violin methods
Violin Ă©tudes
Violin solos without acc.
Violin solos with piano acc.
Violin solos with organ acc.
Violin with viola
Two violins with viola
Violin with cello
Violin duets
Violin duets with piano acc.
Violin duets with cello
Violin trios
Violin trios with piano acc.
Violin quartets
Violin quartets with piano acc.
The second group comprises chamber music works in which the violin plays an important part.
All compositions are listed under the composer’s name, the opus number being given wherever possible. Publishers’ names have been omitted, due to the fact that in the case of all the classical compositions there are numerous good editions to be procured at varying prices, making it inadvisable to recommend any particular edition. It has also been regarded as advisable to omit compositions which fall into the class of elementary pieces for beginners, as the quantity and variety of this class of music precludes the possibility of inclusion without omitting music of more important character.
There is no reason why any of the compositions mentioned in this list cannot be procured by the local music dealer, who can obtain them for his customers through the large music importing houses, although occasionally ...
