Session 1 Guide

Introduce the theme of the course and give a brief overview of what will be covered during this session
The key theme within the course is getting back in control of life
This session will run through eight steps, focusing on different strategies and ways of thinking
Approximate time of 1 hour 15 minutes with no break
Course ground rules
2 minutes
Explain course ground rules: these are on the slides. Give clients the opportunity to add more rules if they think any have been missed
No requirement to share personal experiences but can if wish

To maintain a sense of control during the session
Step 1. How much control do I have?
5–10 minutes
Continuum of control exercise
Control is on a continuum
We all have different levels of control on different aspects of our lives
Understanding control helps us to manage
Use post-its on the continuum with own example/explanation first
Invite clients to participate (including rating the level of control 0-10) and use curious questioning to discuss/explore
Step 2. Why do I want to take control of my anxieties/problems?
5–10 minutes
It can be useful to consider what is important to us—our values/goals
Reasons for taking control on slides—Read anonymized list
Clients fill in the first section on their worksheet: Step 2

A way to explore our goals in more depth is to use an upward arrow technique to clarify the things that are most important
Clients revisit the second section on their worksheet: Step 2—Encourage client to complete own example and make eye contact with facilitators if help is required
Step 3. What causes us problems and blocks our control?

Sometimes, we experience difficulties when we are stuck between different sides of ourselves, or we want something but can’t get it
Introduction: demo how feeling pushed and pulled play out. Ask clients to choose focus on anger, stress, or sadness
Read the example of either anger, stress, or sadness
Demo: elastic band; both facilitators will be involved in the demo
One facilitator will represent no anger (or other example), and the other facilitator will represent high anger
