La Cour d'appel fédérale et la Cour fédérale sont uniques parmi les tribunaux canadiens parce qu'elles sont bilingues, bijuridiques et itinérantes, c'est-à-dire qu'elles entendent des causes dans toutes les régions du Canada. Cet ouvrage inédit a été réalisé en menant des entretiens auprès de soixante-dix-huit juges de ces deux cours, actuels et retraités.Les auteurs présentent un bref historique des Cours fédérales et de leur prédécesseure – la Cour de l'Échiquier du Canada – ainsi qu'un aperçu de leurs compétences, de leurs tendances décisionnelles et de leurs spécificités. Plusieurs chapitres de ce livre traitent des expertises particulières des Cours fédérales, dont le droit administratif, le droit de l'immigration et des réfugiés, la propriété intellectuelle, la sécurité et le renseignement, le droit autochtone, le droit de l'environnement, le droit maritime, le droit du travail, les droits de la personne et le droit fiscal. Le juge en chef Marc Noël et le juge en chef Paul Crampton ont également contribué à cet ouvrage. La préface est rédigée par le juge Frank Iacobucci, et l'épilogue, par le juge Robert Décary.
