Hotels in Hungary are graded from one to five stars. Budapest’s standard visitor accommodation has improved dramatically in the years since the iron curtain came down. As well as quality, the city now has quantity too, which for most of the year keeps prices at a very reasonable level. It is wise, however, to book ahead, particularly for September, New Year, Easter, and at the turn of July and August, when the Hungarian Grand Prix is staged. High season on Lake Balaton is from Easter to September, and during peak times demand is such that some establishments offer half-board only.
