AS YOUNG AS WE WERE EVER GOING TO GET
Godâs man
we were 10 or 11 years old
when we went to see the
priest.
we knocked.
a fat, frumpy woman
answered the door.
âyes?â she asked.
âwe want to see the
priest,â one of us
said.
I think it was Frank
who said
it.
âFather,â the woman
turned her head,
âsome boys want to
see you.â
âtell them to come
in,â said the
priest.
âfollow me,â said the
fat, frumpy lady.
we followed her.
the priest was in his
study.
he was behind his
desk.
he pushed some papers
aside.
âyes, boys?â
the lady left the
room.
âwell,â I said.
âwell,â said Frank.
âyes, boys, go aheadâŠâ
âwell,â said Frank, âwe
wondered if God was
really there.â
the Father smiled.
âbut, of course, He
is.â
âbut where is He?â
I asked.
âhavenât you boys
studied your catechism?
God is Everywhere.â
âoh,â said Frank.
âthank you, Father,
we just wanted to
know,â I said.
âitâs quite all right,
boys, Iâm glad you
asked.â
âthank you, Father,â
said Frank.
we both did little
bows, then
turned
and walked out of
the room.
the fat, frumpy lady
was waiting.
she led us down the
hall and to the
door.
we walked along the
street.
âI wonder if heâs
fucking her?â Frank
asked.
I looked around for God,
then answered,
âof course, he isnât.â
âbut what does he do
when he gets
excited?â
asked Frank.
âhe probably prays,â
I said.
âitâs not the same
thing,â said Frank.
âhe has God,â I said,
âhe doesnât need
that.â
âI think heâs fucking
her,â said Frank.
âoh yeah?â
âyeah.
why donât we go back
and ask him?â
âyou go back and ask
him,â I said, âyouâre
the one whoâs
curious.â
âIâm afraid to,â
said Frank.
âyouâre afraid of God,â
I said.
âwell, arenât you?â
he asked.
âsure.â
we stopped then at a
red light, waiting for
traffic.
neither of us had been
to Mass for
months.
it was boring.
it was more fun
talking to the
priest.
the light changed and
we crossed
over.
not normal
when I was in grammar school
our teacher told us a story
about a sailor
