By this section, the client should be well into or near the third stage of grief work, reclamation and reconciliation. Simply put, in this stage the issues involve moving on and fully building and living a life without the deceased. This section contains five exercises to help clients focus on current and new relationships.

PURPOSE

This section will help clients consider current and future relationships in their lives and understand the changing nature and role of relationships as they work through grief issues.

TYPES OF SITUATIONS FOR WHICH THIS INFORMATION MAY BE MOST USEFUL

This work is most appropriate for clients who are coming to terms with their relationships as they settle into their lives without their love one.

Setting Perspective

RELATIONSHIPS

One of the most significant aspects of life is social interaction—the personal relationships and community that connect you to other people.
Community is about shared values and experiences, but above all about an intimacy that exists between its members. As you move on with your life, it's important to think about, build on, and perhaps renew your current relationships—and, more than likely, build new relationships as well.

RECONFIGURING RELATIONSHIPS

There are many relationships in your life, and there will be many more to come. In many ways, we define ourselves by our relationships. How you see yourself is quite likely affected deeply by your relationships—the more positive, gratifying, and supportive relationships you've had, the more likely you are to feel good about yourself.
Most of the exercises in this workbook are about relationships—especially your relationship with your loved one. But as you move on with your life, the focus increasingly shifts to your relationships with others—those in your past, present, and future.
