Acknowledgments
Having had the fortunate opportunity to compile the Transmaterial series of books, I welcomed the chance to author a title about how materials could be applied in architecture. I am indebted to Jennifer Thompson, Clare Jacobson, Linda Lee, Paul Wagner, and Kevin Lippert at Princeton Architectural Press for their support of a book that attempts to transcend the how-to-manual model and illuminate the elusive nature of material innovation in design.
I would like to thank Renee Cheng, Thomas Fisher, Mary Guzowski, Rachel Iannacone, Lance LaVine, and Stephen Weeks at the University of Minnesota for encouraging my research on material applications in architecture, as well as the rest of the faculty, staff, and students in the College of Design of the University of Minnesota for their continued support. I am also grateful to the graduate students who participated in my Material Strategies seminar for their valued input during the past two years: Solomon Atta, Andrew Blaisdell, Skip Carlson, Peter Costanzo, Katherine Dale, Nate Dodge, Molly Eagen, Josh Ekstrand, Jennifer Garman, Anthony Harrington, Aric Larson, Mark LaVenture, Peter Leahy, Alison Markowitz, Engy Michael, Jack Northrup, Lane Rapson, Nathan Roisen, Brittney Schwager, Gregory Schwartz, Piseth Tep, James Thompson, Elizabeth Turner, Allison Verdoorn, and Ahti Westphal.
I am deeply indebted to my wife, Heather Brownell, who provided invaluable assistance in securing photography and permissions for the book and who accompanied me to China to research several important projects. This trip to East Asia was made possible by a University of Minnesota Imagine Fund grant, as well as by the generous hospitality of Eric and Jennifer Phillips in Shanghai and Hiroshi Ota in Tokyo.
I am very grateful to Ned Cramer, Braulio Agnese, Elizabeth Donoff, Lindsey Roberts, and Greig O’Brien of Hanley Wood for their support of my ongoing materials investigations in Architect magazine’s Mind & Matter column and in other publications.
Finally, I would like to thank my family for their patient and loving support of this endeavor.
