Die so genannte »Verdeutschung der Schrift«, die Übersetzung der hebräischen Bibel, von Martin Buber in Zusammenarbeit mit Franz Rosenzweig Anfang der 1920er Jahre in Deutschland begonnen und 1961 von Buber in Jerusalem beendet, gilt als eines der wichtigsten und zugleich umstrittensten Projekte im Gesamtwerk von Martin Buber.Der vorliegende Band versammelt alle Schriften Bubers, die im Kontext dieser Bibelübersetzung entstanden sind, darunter den wegweisenden Aufsatz »Der Mensch von heute und die jüdische Bibel« sowie die autobiographische Schrift »Warum und wie wir die Schrift übersetzten«. Weiterhin enthält der Band mehrere Abhandlungen zur Gesprochenheit und Einheit der Schrift sowie zum Leitwortprinzip, die für die weitere Forschung zur Bibel und ihrer Übersetzung bis heute von zentraler Bedeutung sind.
