Il resoconto di un viaggio in India ai primi del Novecento, un Paese ancora sotto l'egida del colonialismo, meta di commercianti, militari, avventurieri e viaggiatori assetati di esotismo e magia d'Oriente. Gozzano vi si reca in cerca del caldo, per curare una malattia polmonare che lo condurrà alla morte solo tre anni più tardi. Egli vi si accosta con la curiosità dei viaggiatori romantici, per molti versi affascinato ma allo stesso tempo ironico, capace di mettere allo scoperto, in quelle terre occupate dagli inglesi, le contraddizioni di due mondi che si sono incontrati per forza e non per simpatia. A poco a poco, come succede a chi va in India, il suo animo si armonizza e il suo sguardo, da spietato osservatore, si fa sempre più dolce, mutando timbri e venature, fino a trasformare il cronista nel poeta che è, testimone perfetto di un'epoca giunta alla fine. Ne risultano scritti in forma di lettere, che sono anche un testo di viaggio, un diario, una raccolta di appunti, una serie di articoli di giornale (apparsi infatti dal 1914 al 1916 su La Stampa e altri quotidiani), infine raccolti in questo volume postumo, intitolato "Verso la cuna del mondo".
