Al preparar este libro extraje gran parte de los datos históricos de una gran variedad de fuentes. Mi preferida, la más completa y original, es el libro de E.T. Bell, Men of Mathematics (aunque no me gusta el título sexista, además de engañoso pues dos de los matemáticos que en él se mencionan son mujeres; el libro se escribió en 1937). Al parecer otros historiadores han obtenido su información de Bell, por lo que no mencionaré aquí sus nombres. Todas las fuentes importantes aparecen en las notas al pie de página. Por añadidura, los artículos de Jacquelyn Savani de la Universidad de Princeton (Princeton Weekly Bulletin, 6 de septiembre de 1993) me resultaron útiles, y le agradezco que me haya enviado una cinta del programa emitido por la BBC acerca del último teorema de Fermat.
