Staying Awake

The Gospel for Changemakers

About this book

Jesus asked his followers to stay awake, which begs the question: stay awake to what? Staying Awake is a practical exploration of Christianity for people who want to show up for justice and stay in the movement. Complete with stories, worksheets, poetry, illustrations, and a commitment to centering queer people of color, this book is here to support you in staying awake: to God, to the evils of oppression, and the world's coming liberation.

Chapter 1: Worship
Staying Awake to Love
Growing ain’t cheap.
The believers devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching, to the community, to their shared meals, and to their prayers. A sense of awe came over everyone. God performed many wonders and signs through the apostles. All the believers were united and shared everything. They would sell pieces of property and possessions and distribute the proceeds to everyone who needed them. Every day, they met together in the temple and ate in their homes. They shared food with gladness and simplicity. They praised God and demonstrated God’s goodness to everyone. The Lord added daily to the community those who were being saved.
All around the world, there are families who walk miles to
participate in worship services. Teenagers
sneak out of their parents’ home to go to church. People get together to worship even when it’s dangerous, socially or physically, just because worship is so meaningful. At New City Church, college students roll out of bed, social workers who had a hell of a week stumble in, and people who partied late into the night show up with the smell of alcohol still in their hair.
I know that for folks who are new to this stuff, worship can be everything from boring to awkward to actually abusive. Trust me, I’ve been to plenty of churches where the worship service felt a lot like a hostage situation.
But when I read in the book of Acts about the church as it first came together, about how they said their prayers as if their lives depended on it, about how awe settled on them like the first thaw after a long winter, I can’t help but think that worship is supposed to provide much more nourishment.
Why is it that some people care about worship so, so much? I’m betting my whole career that it’s more than just habit, just the need for a motivational talk, or even just community. After all, don’t even white supremacists feel community when they’re at a rally? There is something more fundamental and transformative to the experience of worship.
For me, worshipping is kind of like kissing in that once you try it, you can only describe it with metaphor to someone who hasn’t experienced it.
That doesn’t mean that people who haven’t worshipped or kissed are bad, or that people who worship a lot or kiss a lot are automatically morally superior; it just means that it’s a unique experience that…changes you.
Worship feels like eati...
