In Die Untergegangenen und die Geretteten beschreibt der Holocaust-Überlebende Primo Levi ein Paradox der Zeugenschaft: Die wahren Zeugen der Shoah seien jene, die umgebracht wurden, bevor sie Zeugnis ablegen konnten. Von diesem Paradox ausgehend, untersucht die Arbeit das Problem der Zeugenschaft in bzw. von Holocaust-Darstellungen seit den 1950er Jahren. Mit welchen Strategien ist es diesen Darstellungen - in Theaterinszenierungen, literarischen Texten, Filmen, Hörspielen, Comics und Reportagen - möglich, sich in der von Levi konstatierten Abwesenheit von Zeugen als Zeugnisse zu autorisieren? Welche ethischen Schwierigkeiten sind mit einer solchen Autorisation verbunden? Vor dem Hintergrund der nachhaltigen Verschiebung in der Erinnerungskultur, die mit dem Sterben auch der überlebenden Opfer einhergeht, analysiert die Arbeit eine Vielzahl paradigmatischer Texte und Ereignisse.
